Director Joel Souza was also wounded in the incident on set of Rust that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, authorities say
Authorities say U.S. film star Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun at a movie set, killing cinematographer Helena Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
The incident happened Thursday on the set of an independent feature film Rust in Bonanza Creek Farm, south of Santa Fe, the capital of the state of New Mexico, police said.
The sheriff’s office confirms that two people were shot dead on Xing’s seat. Helena Hutchins, 42, and director Joel Souza, 48, were shot dead when 68-year-old producer and actor Alec Baldwin dropped his firearm.
No charges have been filed so far in the incident, police said, adding that they were investigating the shooting and interviewing witnesses.
According to authorities, Hutchins was airlifted to New Mexico Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, while Souza was taken by ambulance to Christ’s St. Vincent Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
It was not immediately clear how serious Souza’s injuries were, although actress Francis Fisher tweeted early Friday that “Souza texted me he was out of hospital.”
A Baldwin spokesman said there was an accident on the seat that involved an incorrect firing of an empty prop gun.
“Mr Baldwin was interviewed by spies,” Santa Fe Sheriff’s spokesman Juan Reeves told AFP.
He made statements and answered their questions. He came in voluntarily and left the building after finishing his interview. No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made.
Baldwin was seen crying outside the sheriff’s office Thursday, Santa Fe New Mexico reported, but attempts to get a comment failed.
Baldwin later said in a statement on Twitter: “I have no words to express my shock and grief at the tragic accident that killed our wife, mother and our most capable colleague Helena Hutchins. “
“I am in touch with her husband, extending my support to her and her family. Baldwin said that my heart is broken for her husband, his son and all those who know Helena and Used to like
The deadline quoted a source in the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department as saying that Baldwin was interrogated by investigators and later released.
Baldwin is a co-producer of the 1880s Kansas-based Western film and has played the role of Rusty, the illegitimate grandfather of a 13-year-old boy convicted of accidental murder.
Known for imitating former US President Donald Trump on the recent NBC comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live, Baldwin has a long history in film and television, including the role of Glenn Glenn Ross and 30 Rock.
Originally from Ukraine, Hutchins once worked as an investigative reporter in Europe.
He graduated from the American Film Institute in 2015 and was selected as one of the American Cinematographer’s 2019 Rising Stars.
Her last Instagram post, two days ago, was a video of her riding a horse, wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
“One of the benefits of evening shooting is that you can ride horses on your vacation,” he said in the post.
April Wright, a writer, director and producer, paid tribute to Hutchins on Facebook.
Wright wrote, “I’m in disbelief.” Very young, dynamic, and talented. Such an amazing soul. My heart goes out to her son and family.
The incident commemorates the death of 1993 actor Brendan Lee, the son of film legend Bruce Lee, who was shot in the barrel of a prop gun during the filming of The Crow.
Lee’s sister, Shannon, who runs her official Twitter page, tweeted on Friday, “Our hearts go out to Helena Hutchins’ family and Joel Souza and everyone involved.”
No one should be killed with a gun on the set of a movie. Period. “
