News anchor Brian Williams announced Tuesday he will be leaving NBC News when his contract ends in December, after 28 years with the company, the network confirmed to Forbes.

MSNBC President Rashida Jones told staff earlier in the day that Williams informed them that he “would like to take the coming months to spend time with his family” and would be “signing off” from The 11th Hour, Williams’ show on MSNBC, at the end of the year.

In a statement, Williams said he made the decision to leave after “much reflection” and said NBC “is a part of me and always will be.”
