How to choose the Best Data Centre?

Read Time:2 Minute, 43 Second

Protecting your information

In an era where many firms are thinking about their online security, physical security should play just as much of a role when selecting a Best Data Centre. In a world-class facility, the presence of on-site personnel – as well as thick walls and limited entry points –should be noticeable. Surveillance cameras installed at entrances exist and other access points can provide a constant presence at night. Access cards or fingerprint scanners also add another layer of protection, keeping unauthorized personnel away from the tech.

Location, location location

Location is also a massive factor in the difference between poor and exceptional data centers. Unfortunately, while outsourcing to a center near trans port bubs like airports and railways may appear to be an advantage for employees commuting to the facility, transport accidents can happen. In addition data centers located on an earthquake fault line and flood plains should be avoided due to their proximity to potential natural disasters. The hosting country’s stability should also be given some thought – is it stable politically? Is it in the middle of an economic crisis?

What is the likelihood of vandalism?

On the other side of the spectrum, a location that can accommodate room for growth and is chosen to multiple network points of presence (pops are like gold dust in the datacenter world. Growth and change can be helpful when making a long–term data center decision, while bunker locations are increasing in popularity –owing to their protection from the outside world.

Powering a data center

Keeping a firm’s carbon footprint low, as well as improving its energy consumptions figures, is paramount in 2012’s age of business efficiency. Effective use of power is the name of the game in world-class data centers, especially when demand continues to rise. The biggest firms in the world – Apple, Google, Facebook for example –use 100 MW (Megawatts) of power of just one center. While most firms won’t even use half that, it’s important to know the overall supply situation now and for the future of your selected data center, especially as unexpected events can place stress on supplies.

In addition, the mark of a world-class data center as its source of power- is it carbon neutral? Is it sustainable?  It’s important to outsource to a center that considers where its power comes from especially as government regulations are likely to come into play in the future.

Datacenter redundancy

Downtime is a frustrating hindrance on a company –especially as it could result in lost revenue, client perception, and brand credibility. As a result, data center redundancy is crucial when trying to keep a business stable and functional. Providing two generators, two cooling units, two power feeds –two of everything,in –fact is critical. It gives businesses the best opportunity to run as normal in the event of an incident. Uninterruptible power systems can also deliver power regardless of a disaster.

Substandard datacenters may seem like a cheaper option but it’s a poor long–term business decision. Downtime, poor environmental awareness, inadequate security, and poor location can be killers in the world of business, thus highlighting the importance of world-class data centers and their advantage to the business
